U.S. SENATE CANDIDATE TO HEADLINE DEMOCRATIC RALLIES IN NUECES AND SAN PATRICIO COUNTIES

U.S. Senate candidate Lt. Gen. Ricardo Sanchez, U.S. Army – Ret., who commanded coalition ground forces during Operation Iraqi Freedom, will headline a Nueces County Democratic Rally on July 2 at Molina Veterans park in Corpus Christi  and a July 22 event for San Patricio Democrats in Sinton.

The Nueces County rally, dubbed “La Palance – Otra Vez!” will run from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. Sanchez is running to replace U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, R-Texas, who is retiring. Other speakers will include former U.S. Rep. Solomon Ortiz, former State Reps. Abel Hererra and Solomon Ortiz Jr., former state Sen. Hector Uribe and Linda Chavez-Thompson, vice chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee.

The Sinton event is the fourth BBQ fundraiser for the county party and San Patricio United Democrats (SPUDS) . The event will begin at 7 p.m. Friday, July 22, at the Sinton Community Center.

Individual tickets are $35 per person. VIP tickets are $50 and include admission to a private party at Flores Grocery starting at 5:30 the night of the event. Tables of eight range from $400 to $1,000.

Rebates of $700 are available for Democratic parties that sell $1,000 tables in their home counties. PAUL RIVERA SEEKS CONSTABLE SPOT IN PRECINCT ONE

Longtime law enforement officer Paul Rivera has announced that he will seek the Democratic nomination for Nueces County Constable, Precinct 1 seat in 2012.

Rivera, a Democrat, retired from the Nueces County Sheriff’s office in 2009. Before that he spent 27 years with the Corpus Christi Police Department, most of that as a homicide detective, and nearly a year as Taft’s police cheif. . He then worked another 12 years as a captain for the Nueces County Sheriff’s Office until his retirement in 2009.

After that, he spent nearly a year as Taft’s police chief.

Rudy Caceres, a Democrat, is currently the Precinct 1 Constable.

13th COURT JUSTICE GINA BENAVIDES SEEKS RE-ELECTION

Justice Gina Benavides will seek re-election to the 13th Court of Appeals, Place 5 seat. She was first elected tothe court in 2007 and made the announcement on June 22 at the Nuevo Santander Gallery, 717 N. Main St. in McAllen. Justices serve six-year terms.

Benavides has more than 17 years of courtroom experience as a litigator and worked at a primary defense firm in Harlingen on cases involving issues of toxic tort, products liability, commercial litigation and personal injury. She has also worked as a plaintiff’s lawyer.

13th COURT JUSTICE NELDA V. RODRIGUEZ WILL SEEK RE-ELECTION

 Justice Nelda V. Rodriguez plans to seek another term in the 13th Court of Appeals, Place 4 seat, to which she was first elected in 1995.

Rodriguez, a resident of Corpus Christi, worked with her husband, attorney Rene Rodriguez, before being elected and has also served as a city municipal court judge and Title IV-D court master. She is co-founder and director of the Fighting to Rid Gangs in America Foundation and Operation Satori, a martial arts program for at-risk youth.

DEMOCRAT DISTRICT ATTORNEY MARK SKURKA ANNOUNCES RE-ELECTION BID

District Attorney Mark Skurka, who won an election to fill the unexpired term of Carlos Valez in November announced he will seek re-election.

Skurka spent about 25 years as a Nueces County prosecutor, said in the months he has served in the top spot he has brought stability, professionalism and integrity to the post.
